The tools we should be discussing.

When dog trainers talk about "tools," most people know what that means: collars, leashes, e-collars, prongs, slip leads, harnesses, halters, treats, clickers, maybe even a target stick.

That’s the definition most people use. And that’s why so many of our arguments end up going in circles.


But the trainers I respect most, regardless of whether they’re R+ purists, balanced trainers, working-dog handlers, or force-free educators, have a different idea of what a "tool" really is. It’s not the one you see argued about online.


In applied behavior analysis, the tools that shape whether a dog learns aren’t pieces of hardware.


They’re analytical: observation, operational definitions, functional assessment, motivating operations, discriminative stimuli, reinforcement schedules, criterion ladders, generalization plans, and troubleshooting frameworks. These are the categories of analysis Cooper, Heron, and Heward have laid out as the foundation of the field. They’re what skilled trainers reach for first when a behavior gets stuck, a dog isn’t responding, or the work that looked easy in the backyard falls apart in the real world.


Equipment is downstream of all those decisions.


Let me say that again, because it's the heart of this post.'


Equipment comes after analysis. With the right analytical tools, you can teach the dog even if your gear isn’t ideal. But if your analysis is off, it doesn’t matter what equipment you use—you’ll get nowhere. Sometimes, you’ll even end up teaching the dog something you never intended.


This isn’t about arguing for or against any particular piece of equipment. It’s about what we mean by "tools" in the first place.


Consider a real scenario: a young detection dog isn’t sitting at odor (or is now looking back) on vehicles during sweeps. The handler has tried everything obvious. New training picture, smaller search areas, and different odor placement.


Online, this becomes a tool conversation almost immediately. Try a leash pop to remind them to sit. Are you waiting out the look back and marking with a clicker? Try your verbal cue. Use a low-level stim to get through the noise to remind them to sit.


Every one of those responses is about equipment.


Now run the same scenario through the analytical toolkit.


Observation. What does the slow sit/look back actually look like? Not in general: in this dog, on this odor, in this environment. Is the latency consistent across reps, or is it variable? Where are the dog's eyes between the location of odor and the sit? Does the head turn, or does it stay focused on odor? Is the back end folding cleanly, or is the dog repositioning first? Is there a beat of "checking in" before the behavior starts? How many look-backs per second, or is it a rapid-fire look-back?


Behavioral observation is the first dimension Baer, Wolf, and Risley named when they defined applied behavior analysis in 1968. "Behavioral," meaning observable, measurable, and described in language that two trainers watching the same footage would agree on.


Decades later, this is still the first skill that breaks down in most training problems I see, not because trainers don’t watch their dogs, but because watching isn’t the same as observing.


A handler who can describe the dog's working pattern in concrete behavioral terms has performed the analysis on which the rest of this toolkit depends. Without that, you're reaching for equipment to fix something you haven't actually seen.


Functional assessment. What's reinforcing the unwanted behavior? Reinforcement is happening for any behavior that persists, so something is paying. Iwata and colleagues laid the foundation for this kind of analysis in 1982, in a paper that remains one of the most cited works in applied behavior analysis. The premise is simple. If a behavior is occurring, it's being reinforced by something in the environment. Your job is to figure out what. The handler might be reinforcing every alert without confirming odor. The dog could be getting the handler's attention, or the handler's movement toward the odor, the moment they sit.


Operational definition. What's the criterion for a clean alert that this slow sit/look back is failing? If "clean" hasn't been defined precisely (latency, body position, distance from source, duration of behavior), there's no way to tell the repetitions at criteria from the ones that aren't, and there's no way to reinforce one and not the other.

And saying "I know what it looks like" just leads to ambiguity.


Motivating operation. Is the dog tired? Have you run too many sessions today? Is the dog offering the sit/look back because they've occasionally been reinforced for offering it, and it is easier to offer a stand than the trained final response? Motivating operations are what Laraway, Snycerski, Michael, and Poling refined and codified in a 2003 paper that working trainers don't read often enough. They're the conditions that shift the value of a consequence in the moment, and they're invisible until you start looking for them.


Once you’ve worked through those questions, the equipment issue usually answers itself, or stops mattering. You know what the dog is doing and why. Choosing gear becomes a technical decision, not a philosophical debate.


This is why most training arguments online go nowhere. People argue over hardware without first doing the analytical work that would tell anyone what the hardware is supposed to do. Even research comparing training methods, like China, Mills, and Cooper’s 2020 study on e-collars versus reward-based training, has to focus on the equipment, because that’s where the debate is stuck. The deeper question of what trainers are actually analyzing often goes unasked and unmeasured.


This isn’t a new idea. Bob Bailey has said for decades that behavior is a study of one: the specific dog, the specific moment, the specific conditions. Karen Pryor wrote a whole book about how the rules of behavior don’t care what equipment you use. The science of learning has been clear on this since Thorndike and Skinner. The tools that matter are the ones for measuring and analyzing. The leash is just what you’re holding while you use them.


Most of us know this if we slow down. It’s just harder to remember when we’re scrolling, or when someone online says something that rubs us the wrong way about a collar in a video. The temptation is always to argue about what’s visible, not what’s invisible.


The visible thing is on the dog. The invisible thing is in the trainer.


Here’s what happens when you start taking the analytical tools seriously.


You stop arguing about gear and start asking better questions about the work.


Conversations between trainers from different camps get more productive because the language of analysis is shared, even if the equipment preferences aren’t.


You catch your own mistakes faster because you have a way to check yourself that doesn’t depend on what you’re holding.


And the dog gets better. Which, after all, is the point.


Next time you find yourself reaching for an answer about a piece of equipment, yours or someone else’s, try asking a different question first: What is the dog actually doing? What’s reinforcing that? What’s your operational definition for what you want instead?


What do you see when you really slow down and watch?


Those are the tools. Everything else is what's in your hand while you use them.
