The Handler is a Variable

Here's a training statement I hear: the dog is solid at home, inconsistent while out and about.
This could apply to any form of training, obedience, detection, directionals, and a reinforcement system. We adjust the dog's training. We add more reps, run more environments, vary the hides. Some of that helps.
Sometimes, what actually changed was the handler.
Act One: The Antecedent Picture
Before a dog offers any behavior, something in the environment sets it up. Behavior analysts call this the antecedent: every stimulus present before the behavior that, over time, signals whether reinforcement is available. We talk a lot about odor as the antecedent in detection work. The dog encounters odor, offers the trained final response, and gets paid. Clean and simple.
Except that's not quite all the dog is learning.

The dog is not only learning from odor. The dog is learning from the entire picture: the odor, the surface, the container, the height, the airflow, and the handler standing three feet behind them, holding their breath. That handler is always in the picture (even if we try not to be). Position, movement, tension, timing, breathing rate, gaze direction, all of it is present every time the dog approaches odor. All of it gets paired with reinforcement. All of it can become a discriminative stimulus.
A discriminative stimulus is a signal that indicates to the organism that a particular behavior will be reinforced at this time. Dogs are exceptionally good at reading subtle cues in their environment, because those cues have been the most reliable predictors of what works. When a handler always shifts their weight before delivering the reward, that weight shift becomes part of what the dog responds to. When a handler consistently steps toward the hide as the dog gets close, that movement can become part of the antecedent chain. The dog is not wrong. The dog is responding to every variable that has historically predicted reinforcement. The handler is one of those variables.
This shows up in the research. In a 2011 study published in Animal Cognition, Lit, Schweitzer, and Oberbauer found that when handlers were falsely told certain locations contained a target odor, their dogs alerted significantly more often in those locations — even when no odor was present. The handlers were not deliberately cuing their dogs. They were not aware they were doing it. The behavior was in the handler, and the dog was responding to it. We are not going to take up study design here. What matters for our purposes is what the results tell us about handler behavior as an antecedent variable.
Jamieson, Baxter, and Murray looked at what happens when the handler variable changes entirely. When detection dogs worked with an unfamiliar handler, their performance declined and their stress indicators increased. (Jamieson, L.J., Baxter, G.S., & Murray, P.J. (2018). You are not my handler! This is not a dog that was trained poorly. This is a dog whose trained behavior had become partially controlled by stimuli specific to the original handler. Remove the handler, change the antecedent picture, and the stimulus complex no longer fully matches what produced reinforcement during training.
We do not need to speculate about what the dog was experiencing internally. The behavior indicates what happened during the training history.
Act Two: What This Means in Practice
Stimulus control is the degree to which a specific stimulus reliably produces a specific behavior. We aim for high stimulus control in detection work: odor is present, dog alerts. Odor is absent, dog does not alert. But stimulus control is not binary. It exists on a continuum, and what we measure as 'good stimulus control' in training may include variables we have not examined.
If the behavior has developed under tight handler involvement — always the same person, same position, same timing on the reward — some of that stimulus control may belong to handler-specific cues rather than to odor alone. The dog has not failed to generalize. The dog has generalized to exactly what was trained, including the handler components that were never intended as training variables.
Criteria drift is the gradual, unexamined shift in which behavior is actually reinforced. It does not happen on purpose. A handler is late with their marker and accidentally marks when the dog is looking at the handler, creating a look-back. A handler always delivers the reward from the same shoulder, and the dog orients toward that shoulder at the alert. A handler leans in when the dog is near source, and the dog learns to wait for the lean. None of this is the dog misbehaving. All of it is the dog doing what behavior science says it should: tracking and responding to the most reliable reinforcement predictors in the environment.
The practical application is not complicated, but it is humbling.
Put the handler under the microscope, not just the dog. Video yourself working. Watch for postural changes, timing patterns, and movement before the dog reaches source. These are potential discriminative stimuli. If you cannot see what your body is doing right before the dog alerts, you cannot rule yourself out as a variable.
Train with multiple handlers deliberately and early if you have a dog that will be handled routinely by different people. Not as a proof test, but as an antecedent control measure. If detection is the behavior under development, the antecedent picture should include variation in handler appearance, movement, scent, and timing from the beginning. This is not about confusing the dog. This is about ensuring odor does the heavy lifting in controlling the behavior, rather than sharing that work with handler-specific stimuli that will not travel to the field.
Audit your reinforcement history. What does the dog do when you are certain no odor is present? What behaviors does the dog offer before the trained final response? Where does the dog look after alerting? The reinforcement history is written in the dog's behavior. You can read it if you slow down and watch.
One more layer worth noting: Zubedat and colleagues found that when handlers were under physiological stress, detection dog performance on explosive detection tasks declined significantly. (Zubedat, S., Aga-Mizrachi, S., Cymerblit-Sabba, A., Shwartz, J., Leon, J.F., Rozen, S., Varkovitzky, I., Eshed, Y., Grinstein, D., & Avital, A. (2014). Human-animal interface: The effects of handler's stress on the performance of canines in an explosive detection task. Applied Animal Behaviour Science, 158, 69–75.) From a behavior analysis standpoint, the implication is clear: handler state is an antecedent variable. A handler who is operating differently than during training is a changed antecedent picture. The dog is responding to the conditions present, not to the conditions the handler intends.
None of this makes the handler the villain. It makes the handler part of the training system, which is where the handler has always been.
The question is whether we are accounting for it.
