Exhausted, Exhilarated and Overwhelmed

laurelannpilkingto

Training Tuesday

Over the past 3 weeks we have hosted over 30 K9 teams here at the Foundation. Everything from hunting dog training, functional obedience and reinforcement systems to bed bug, cadaver dog, and bomb dog teams. This is the exhausting part.

Watching these teams make HUGE strides in their training, making break throughs and having a-ha moments. Watching the struggle and fight through.

Seeing the handlers work with others outside their speciality to learn new skills, search strategies and handling techniques.

To see dogs take joy in their work. This is the exhilarating part.

Then looking at myself and seeing all of the work I need/want to do and some of the training goals I've set for myself which I'm NOT getting done. This is the overwhelming part.

I'm still wrapping my head around how to best attack the feeling of 'overwhelming'. The thing that seems to be working at the moment...

2 minute training sessions per dog. At LEAST once a day.

Now, keep in mind, this is for my functional obedience or other training. We still do other things each week for the odor training, since that training is complete.

How do you keep yourself on track to train some of those sexy fundamentals?
