Creating Space to Train

Training Tuesday

What do you want to do with your dogs today?

That was the question my training partner asked me yesterday. I replied with a simple goal. "Let's stretch them out." (This means to throw bumpers out at longer distances so the dogs aren't limited by the distance of my throwing arm.)

We did this in two different scenarios (water and land) and we were done for the day.

This is the first time in a long time I had created appropriate mental space and had the ideal physical space to train.

Meaning....

One simple goal in multiple venues.

We had the physical space to teach the lesson.

We did what we needed to for each dog to learn that specific lesson.

In under 4 repetitions per venue per dog.

And we were done.

As I was driving home, I had a training high. I really did.

Then I asked myself why was this training session so different? I realized the clarity in which I approached that training session was due to two things.

First, I had the mental space to think about what I wanted to teach that day. BECAUSE I had the time to think on the way to training.

No phone calls, no text messages, no worrying about the 47 things I had to do when I got home. Just a cup of coffee and some good old windshield training time.

Second, I had the physical space (and help) to train what I needed to train.

I found this training session HIGHLY reinforcing. I've been thinking about it a lot over the last 24 hours and realized that often we try to fit too many things into a session....

Why do we feel that more is always better when it comes to training? Why bunch all of the variables in at once? Is it so we get our 'moneys' worth?

It relieved a lot of pressure when all I wanted was to have my dogs do this one thing....really well.

What is the 'one thing' you want to work on in your next training session and how are you going to set it up?

Happy Training,

Robin
